Background

One day while speaking with Sri Mahaprabu I had asked about Lust. How powerful it can be in dragging me down. As always, Sri Mahaprabu responded with such compassion and intelligence that it made a huge difference. Also we had just had a long conversation about Surrender. He responded to the question about Lust along the lines of Surrender. Please make sure to read a subsequent talk on this same topic, where Sri Mahaprabu went into much more detail. That link is at the bottom of this page.

Dealing with lustful thoughts

Birth itself is because of lust. It is in the genes. Even seeing the inner garment of a woman hanging on a clothesline can kindle it. Then you can imagine! The impression is that happiness comes from the woman’s body. In Satsang as you will constantly hear that happiness is only inside, and slowly as you experience happiness inside, these thoughts will dilute. So once you get the taste of this inner happiness you will not chase other thoughts. You can easily come out of it. Just let it be for now. You have not created it, so don’t take responsibility for it. Let it be. Mahaprabu will guide you. The World, Body, Thoughts and Feelings are not me, so Kāma is also not me. Also, can there be Kāma without Ātma? (At this point a lorry passed by. It had a message painted on the back, which Sri Mahaprabu not only read to me but took a photo and sent it.) He said: See how apt the message that just passed in the lorry is: Aye Maname Summa Iru, Yellam Avan Seyal. Hey mind, just be still. It is all His work

It is a wrong impression built over janmās that sexual thoughts are a sin, and therefore it has been covered up. That is what creates guilt. Not the act itself. It is nature. Accept it. Only then you will come out of it easier. Guilt promotes ego. Accept it as good. It is also Ātma.

Surrender it all to the Guru

You need not worry about all this, since you are surrendering with all these. (We had just had a long conversation about Surrendering to the Guru.) It is surrendered to Mahaprabu. It is also a holy thought. Like different flowers at his feet. After surrender, if the thought comes, OK surrender it to the feet of the Master. He has accepted. Let us live with this thought but just become the knower, Observe. You are NOT allowed to become the owner of these thoughts. Based on the maturity of your surrender, instruction will come (have faith and trust). Clouds of surrender need to be strengthened, then rain will come. When it will come is not up to us.

We have to treat this problem as follows. Let us say an engineer is programming a rocket to go into a certain orbit. And it fails. What does he do? He solves the problem in the Rocket, without identifying that I am the Rocket. He does not go to the doctor if his Rocket failed. (Laughing). Similarly, I am good. The body and mind are not mine. They exist, but they don’t belong to me. You need to rectify a situation, but first, don’t accept that you are the problem. That needs practice. Each satsang strengthens you. Soon a few words, even silence will hit me. Spirit will hit me. This needs a strong commitment. At one point hear only one voice inside. That of Mahaprabu. That much attention is needed. That is real tuning. At some point a resonance will happen. Both spirits will resonate with the same frequency. Only then real teaching happens. First totally and unconditionally take an oath that whatever Mahaprabu says, I will do. GR must be eliminated. Ātma must be realized. GR cannot eliminate GR. That itself is a real Surrender. Mahaprabu says, if enlightenment is the only goal then there is no way other than Surrender.

This same topic came up again a few months later. This time Sri Mahaprabu went into much more detail, which had such an impact. Please click here to read it.
